Wordle Hint Types

Different clues help in different situations. Use the type that matches what you already know about today’s puzzle.

Meaning Hint

A short description of what the answer means or where it is commonly used, without giving away the spelling.

Starting Letter

The first letter of the answer. Useful when you have vowels confirmed but no idea how the word begins.

Ending Letter

The final letter, which narrows suffixes and plural forms and often settles a difficult last guess.

Vowel Hint

How many vowels the answer contains and which ones they are, so you can rule out vowel-heavy guesses.

Repeated Letters

Whether any letter appears twice – the detail that trips up most players in the final two guesses.

Letter Positions

Where a known letter belongs. Even one confirmed position can cut the candidate list down to a few words.

Best Wordle Starting Words

There is no single best Wordle starting word. What matters is that your first guess tests common letters, includes at least two vowels, and avoids repeating letters.

CRANE

CRANE

Tests two consonants and two vowels, including the very common letter E in a natural position.

SLATE

SLATE

Five frequently used letters in one guess, with a strong vowel pair in the middle of the word.

AUDIO

AUDIO

Loads up on vowels early. Helpful when you want to establish vowel patterns first.

RAISE

RAISE

A balanced mix of consonants and vowels, with the versatile letter S available for later guesses.

STARE

STARE

Combines common consonants with a strong vowel pair, keeping S in a useful opening position.

Wordle Strategy: How to Make Better Guesses

Good Wordle play is mostly about information. Every guess should either confirm a letter’s position or eliminate a group of possibilities.

SLATE

S is correct in position 1. T is correct in position 4. L and E appear but sit elsewhere. A is not in the answer at all.

  • Use informative opening guesses. Pick a first word with common letters and no repeats.
  • Track green letters. Locked positions are the strongest clue you have.
  • Move yellow letters. A yellow tile means the letter is in the answer but somewhere else.
  • Remember eliminated letters. Gray letters are information too.
  • Consider repeated letters. If a yellow letter keeps appearing, the answer may use it twice.
  • Use vowel patterns. Most answers contain two or three vowels.
  • Think about word structure. Common endings such as -ER, -LY, and -CH help you predict.
  • Avoid wasting guesses. On guess five, choose a word certain to be correct.

How to Play Wordle

The rules take a minute to learn. The puzzle takes a little longer to master.

01 – Make a Guess

Type any valid five-letter word

You have six attempts. Start with a word that uses common letters.

02 – Check the Colors

Green, yellow, or gray

Green = correct spot. Yellow = wrong spot. Gray = not in the answer.

03 – Narrow the Word

Use each result to refine

Keep green letters where they are, move yellow letters, and stop using gray letters.

04 – Solve in Six

Land the answer before you run out

By the fifth guess you usually have enough information to commit.

Wordle Rules

A quick reference for how the puzzle behaves.

Five-letter answerEvery solution is a valid five-letter English word.
Six attemptsYou get six guesses per puzzle, resetting daily.
Green lettersCorrect letter in the correct position.
Yellow lettersThe letter is in the answer, but not in that position.
Gray lettersNot in the answer, unless it also shows yellow elsewhere.
Repeated lettersAnswers can use the same letter more than once.

Wordle Hard Mode

Hard Mode changes the strategy rather than the puzzle. Once a letter is revealed, every following guess has to use it. That removes the option of burning a guess on unrelated letters.

Learn About Hard Mode ->Hide Hard Mode Info

Hard Mode strategy in practice

  • Open with two distinct vowel+consonant words.
  • Plan the second guess before submitting the first.
  • Avoid repeating letters in the opener.
  • Keep a mental note of possible next words.
  • Accept a lower solve rate – Hard Mode is genuinely harder.
